Digital Security in Smart Metering
Requirements are tough, Cinterion/ Gemalto join forces and support

To most citizens, smart meters are the most visible introduction of “The Internet of Things”. While consumers may not realize the parking meter or vending machine they just used is equipped with M2M technology, anyone whose gas or electric meter was upgraded with a smart meter understands it uses in many cases wireless technology to immediately send usage data back to the utility.

Smart meters are rapidly replacing their manually read predecessors; however, the technology requirements are quite challenging and can present formidable barriers to deployment. Intelligent devices shall meet strict regulations set forth by local, regional or national authorities. This is especially true in Germany, where the German National Agency for security in information technology (BSI) has set high standards for security levels by issuing a legally binding protection profile for smart meter gateways.

All smart meter gateways deployed in Germany must be certified against common criteria and evaluation assurance levels defined in the BSI protection profile and its annexes. This ensures that the gateway, AKA the smart metering system, is designed and manufactured to meet an adequate level of security requirements ensuring interoperability of all certified meters within the evolving smart grid.

Cinterion’s smart meter clients are now able to take advantage of Gemalto’s 20+ years experience in managing certification against common criteria assurance levels and achieving the highest levels of evaluations and certifications. Trusted Labs, an independent state-of-the-art evaluation and testing lab can deliver services when preparing the certification. Trusted Labs offers an unprecedented level of expertise in security assessments confirming that all units are tested against the world’s strictest certifications and standards for smart metering and energy.

Gemalto is pleased to offer this expertise to all Cinterion customers targeting the German smart meter market. We can help by providing pre-evaluations and quality assurance that ultimately reduce the cost of certification and decrease time to market while ensuring product longevity. Most countries have not yet defined their security requirements and planned certification approach. Gemalto is leading the way by working with the European Smart Metering industry group (ESMIG) to facilitate and define the path toward European wide acceptance of risk assessments and certification approaches based on use cases. I am personally chairing this working group. This work is crucial to avoid fragmentation of European approaches and standards that could pose serious challenges down the road.

Cinterion Debuts EHS5, a Powerful Java Module During Keynote Address at Global JavaOne Convention

45,000 Java developers from around the world descended upon San Francisco in October for the JavaOne Developers Conference where Cinterion debuted its powerful EHS5 embedded Java module during the keynote address. The ultra compact, high-speed M2M communication module drew “Oohs” and “Aahs” from the excited Java community who was impressed by the module’s compact footprint and powerful ME 3.2 engine. The feature-rich EHS5 represents a milestone in miniaturized, scalable M2M technology. Sharing the same compact footprint as Cinterion 2G products, this next-generation solution enables network migration within a single design while ensuring long-lasting, future-proof applications. The solution’s powerful Java-based application environment simplifies and speeds M2M solution design and integration while enabling lean system architecture by running software directly on the Cinterion module eliminating the expense of additional co-processors and memory chips. The module’s Java Virtual Machine (JVM) serves as a hub connecting application software with security elements and end user computer systems to greatly ease integration and deployment. In addition, it enables value added features such as over-the-air (OTA) provisioning and remote updates of data and applications, which are crucial for keeping M2M solutions current over the long life of applications, which can often exceed 10 years.

The Safe Road Ahead…Successful HeERO Pilot Program in Romania

The European Commission’s challenge to developing an interoperable Pan-European eCall program is a monumental task; one that ERTICO and its member organizations have tackled with the launch of the Harmonised European eCall Pilot program, otherwise known as HeERO. Designed to synchronize eCall systems across country and network borders, the program hinges on two key elements: a widely distributed modern Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) infrastructure, and installed or embedded Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communication devices in all vehicles. Cinterion played an instrumental role in HeERO test pilot successfully implemented in Romania, which has become the de facto blueprint for eCall rollouts across the European Union.  Cinterion technology and expertise was leveraged in both updating Romania antiquated PSAP system and in powering the onboard eCall solutions.  Based on early results, the European Commission estimates that eCall will reduce emergency response times by as much as 50 percent in rural areas and 40 percent in urban areas, saving countless lives as well as up to €14 billion in the EU 25 annually!
