►State of the automotive app store, part II
What used to be called the hybrid approach for connectivity – providing an embedded modem in the head unit while also using the mobile phone for some connectivity – has expanded to include the apps themselves. This means a combination of some smartphone-installed apps with other apps and services being available via an OEM-run app store and accessed from the head unit.
Ödesjö has spent more than a decade with Volvo in a variety IT and automotive functions. In his current capacity, he heads up a telematics software development organization of 120, which develops and maintains telematics solutions for customers both inside Volvo Group and at other automotive OEMs.
An estimated 421,000 people were injured in car crashes involving a distracted driver in the United States in 2012. Texting while driving made an accident 23 times more likely to happen. And 21% of 15- to 19-year-old drivers involved in a fatal car crash were distracted by the use of a cell phone.
