(Telematics Update) Hyundai, Mazda, Honda & Kia present connected car features at Super Bowl XLVIII

Insurance telematics makes its initial beachhead in Canada, part I

Canadian automobile insurance is among the most expensive in the world – the result of high accident rates, lack of competition in the Western provinces and widespread insurance fraud in Ontario. In 2011, automobile insurance accounted for 50% of total property and casualty premiums.

Frey spoke to TU’s Jan Stojaspal about the many challenges American Family Insurance is having to overcome as it trials its first telematics insurance product. He also spoke about maintaining the company’s identity and the mishap that led to his employees’ car batteries dying.

For more than a decade, the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) has been at work on a set of coding standards intended to enable a single piece of code – be it for an app or a website – to display across a broad range of connected devices. And the automotive industry has been paying close attention, hoping this new set of standards, known as HTML5, would increase the number of apps available for the connected vehicle, or, at the very least, bring down development costs.

In this video from Telematics Munich 2013, David Voss, technical lead engineer for HMI, Adam Opel, talks to TU’s Jan Stojaspal about the importance of designing an in-car user experience that is both intuitive and customizable.

In this week’s Brief: Hyundai, Mazda, Honda, Kia, Volkswagen, Audi, Chevrolet, Toyota, Chrysler, Berkshire Hathaway Insurance, MyAssist, Ford, Mercedes-Benz USA, Verizon Telematics, TeleNav, skobbler GmbH, Sierra Wireless, In Motion, BMW, Napster, Nissan North America, SiriusXM, Google, IDC Manufacturing Insights and Tata Motors.

Insurance Telematics Canada 2014 will unite the emerging technical players of the UBI space with Canada’s biggest insurance carriers and brokers, making this a must-attend event at a tipping point for the industry.

With the DOT announcing their first step in their vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure mandate process in 2014, now it is time to investigate the full potential of this emerging technology. Don’t get left behind on the journey to a connected and intelligent automotive world as advanced automotive safety technologies move from theory to reality.
