(Telematics Update) Telematics and content sourcing strategies: Part II

If car OEMs are able to overcome their fears, one can foresee a time when a car owner will simply go online to purchase and download an app for his vehicle, which will take the job of choosing content out of the car maker’s hands and let the market determine what content is made available where. (OEMs would still control critical services, verify if applications are safe to use in the car and ensure a uniform branding experience.)

At Daimler, he is responsible for international sales and marketing of FleetBoard, the company’s telematics and fleet management solution. Van Thielen spoke to TU’s Jan Stojaspal about whether factory-fitted commercial telematics will hold their own against the aftermarket, including, most recently, smartphone- and tablet-based fleet management solutions.

The average car on the road today generates a mind-boggling amount of data. With sensors monitoring everything from tire pressure to engine RPM to oil temperature and speed, cars can produce anywhere from 5 to 250 gigabytes of data an hour.

In this video from Telematics Detroit 2013, Vasily Suvorov, vice president technology strategy, Luxoft, talks to TU’s Andrew Tolve about the future of human-machine interface (HMI) design. According to him, future HMIs will incorporate multiple screens, including head-up displays and mobile devices of the car's occupants. Customer relationship management will grow in importance, with younger drivers, who no longer care to know about their cars, being the primary beneficiaries. And workload management solutions will play an increasingly prominent role in mitigating driver distraction.

In this week’s Brief: Ford, Livio, Mazda, Aha, Apple, Nissan, Harman, BMW, Sprint, Zubie and Jaguar Land Rover.
