(Telematics Update) Black box versus smartphone in insurance telematics

Greg McGarry, managing director, DriveProfiler (Ireland), explores the filpside of using smartphones as driver-monitoring devices in insurance telematics. 

In this video from Insurance Telematics Europe 2013, Caroline Currie, sales director, Autoline, talks to TU's Jan Stojaspal about pioneering the auto insurance market in Europe with smartphone apps used as driver-monitoring devices. According to her, parents of young drivers were the first to buy in, but the ultimate goal is to make "good driving scores cool for young drivers." 

Consumers in Brazil, Russia, India and China are more willing to embrace all kinds of technology associated with cars, according to a recent survey by Cisco – from telematics to virtual auto buying. And they are prepared to offer all manner of personal information – and even DNA samples – in return for connected car services. 

The patents cover everything from the way auto insurance pricing is determined to related technologies, databases and Internet functionality. And they effectively prevent competitors from offering UBI solutions in the United States without a license from Progressive. 

Apple's Siri is showing up in cars, with most of the major auto makers now also saying they'll support Apple's car-centric iOS 7. Google, meanwhile, keeps hinting that it will deliver autonomous car technology within five years.
