(Telematics Update) Meeting the demands of global telematics market

Gamification is a tech buzz word, but it's also a solid idea: One of the best ways to get people to change their behavior, learn something or do something that's good for them is to make it fun.
In other words, make a game of it.

Laird Technologies is well established in wireless, custom-engineered products for satellite radio, GPS, cellular, AM/FM, Bluetooth and others. Now, the company is moving into providing M2M applications for vehicles. And Jim Ciccarelli is the point person. While many of Laird's in-house capabilities give it an edge in this sector, the company needs to bulk up its engineering capacity and look for more partners.

According to Michael Liu, a senior market analyst with the international research consultancy IHS Automotive, sales of electric vehicles (EVs) in China reached about 3,000 units in the first quarter, which is likely to translate into a little over 10,000 units sold for the whole year.

In this video from Insurance Telematics Europe 2013, Ofir Eyal, principal, The Boston Consulting, talks to TU's Jan Stojaspal about insurance telematics in Italy, the United Kingdom, Germany, France and Spain, highlighting some of the main country-to-country differences. He considers what the tipping points might be for some of these markets and urges market leaders against pushing insurance telematics too aggressively too soon. "If you are a major player and launch telematics too soon, you start cannibalizing your own book," he says. "But being too late means [that] others can start eating into your own book. If you are a follower and you want to grow, this is a fantastic time to enter the market."

In the first major telematics-system rollout by an OEM in 2013, Volkswagen introduced VW Car-Net last week. The system is similar to GM’s OnStar in that it provides comprehensive roadside assistance and crash notification bundled with connectivity features like in-vehicle navigation, remote vehicle status and remote lock/unlock. A mobile app and web portal enable the remote access features.
