(Telematics Update) Smartphones, ADAS and the connected car

It could start with a single virus-infected CD. You play it on your car stereo, and the next thing you know is your car will go no faster than 2 mph.

When asked to summarize, in two sentences, my views on the future of in-car apps, I tend to answer as follows: Do not expect in-car apps to be delivered by a broad developer ecosystem on par with the mobile industry. In this podcast with TU’s Jan Stojaspal, Derek Joyce, manager of product public relations, Hyundai Motor America, discusses gesture recognition and its various uses in the connected vehicle of the future. Combining eye tracking, proximity sensing and gesture recognition, the technology was showcased at the North American International Auto Show in January as part of Hyundai's HDC-14 Genesis concept vehicle.

In this week’s Brief: Apple, Mercedes, Honda, Hyundai, Volvo, Chevrolet, Google, Waze, Facebook, U.S. Federal Government, Cohda Wireless, BMW, University of Michigan’s Transportation Research Institute, NXP Semiconductors, NHTSA, Navitel, Masternaut and E.Novation.

This June in Munich automakers, app developers, content aggregators, wireless carriers, telematics service providers and device manufacturers will gather to share knowledge on how to produce commercially viable in-vehicle content.

With the DOT announcing their first step in their vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure mandate process in 2013, now it is time to investigate the full potential of this emerging technology. Build partnerships to equip you with the knowledge and strategy to pre-empt the market shifts that will occur over the new few years.
