Representatives of Taiwan and mainland China’s automotive industries inked two letters of intent and a framework agreement May 28 in southern Taiwan’s Kaohsiung City, according to the ROC Ministry of Economic Affairs.

Taiwan Transportation Vehicle Manufacturers Association and China Association of Automobile Manufacturers agreed in their letter to launch electric vehicles in Hangzhou, mainland China, with possible expansion to other cities, as well as promote investment in related components and parts.

The other letter, concluded by Taoyuan-based Tangeng Advanced Vehicles Co. Ltd. and Shanghai Sunwin Bus Corp., calls for joint R&D on electric buses and operation models.

Taiwan Telematics Industry Association also inked a cooperation framework agreement with FIC Group Asia Navigation Satellite System and China e-Service Co. Ltd. to develop traffic message channel technology-based applications.

According to the MOEA Industrial Development Bureau, the pacts were finalized during a cross-strait exchange meeting organized by TTVMA, Taichung-based Automobile Research and Testing Center and CAAM.

TTVMA Chairman Chen Kuo-jung said the meeting turned a new page in cross-strait sector cooperation as it was the first time representatives from the local machinery sector were invited to participate.

“We believe the synergy from such interindustry cooperation will create more business opportunities for Taiwan firms,” he said.

Chen added that consensus and conclusions from this year’s discussions will be forwarded to the Cross-Straits Economic Cooperation Committee as a reference for future policymaking.

Launched in 2009 under the auspices of the IDB, the meeting is the most important venue for automakers on both sides of the strait to explore joint business opportunities and share insights on each other’s market development. (JSM)
