(Telematics Update) Bluetooth's smart future in telematics

The Brazilian automotive market is cooling but still hot. In 2010, Brazil became the fourth-largest new-vehicle market, behind China, the United States and Japan. While growth of light vehicle sales has slowed, Brazil is by far the largest automotive market in Latin America, with 25 million consumer vehicles in operation, compared to 7.5 million in Argentina, the next largest market, according to Ward Automotive.

Omkar S. Panse has 16 years of experience in the automotive industry, spanning various vehicle electronics subsystems and technologies. He has been with KPIT Cummins Infosystems Ltd for more than 12 of those years and currently leads the KPIT infotainment platform team. In his role as associate vice president, Panse also oversees KPIT’s contributions to GENIVI, a global alliance aiming to build industry-wide standards for in-vehicle infotainment through open-source innovation.

Bluetooth 4.0, the latest version of the standard, includes low-energy technology that gives devices the ability to connect, share or distribute information in real time. That includes simple data-collecting sensors, smartphones and embedded devices in the car. Someday, maybe, Bluetooth sensors can replace some of the meters of cabling that now connect the car's systems, enable greater personalization and even turn the automobile into a mobile health monitor.

In this video from Telematics Munich 2012, Ralf Meyer, Director of Product Management, German Association of Public Insurers, discusses how the immanent arrival of eCall has prompted new business models in claims management.

Providing seamless and continuous content is absorbing significant levels of investment from automakers as they strive to differentiate their products and keep up with consumer demands.
