(Telematics Update) Toyota, Mercedes and KIA on the future of the connected car

Ford, Audi and NHTSA at CES 2014

The story of consumer electronics and connected car convergence continued to unfold on day one of the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas as Ford discussed assisting the elderly, mobile health and autonomous driving, Audi highlighted five megatrends shaping the connected car today and the outgoing administrator of the NHTSA called the CES the United States’ fourth major auto show.

We took day two of the CES to examine exactly how some of these carmakers are imaging the future of the connected car. What we found was a diverse range of concepts and solutions – from FV2, the far-fetched future mobility concept from Toyota, to simple things like Mazda trying to reimagine a simple calendar app. But what we also found was that, underneath all the diversity, more and more carmakers are thinking in terms of not only how to perfect the various component pieces but also how to bring them together in a more seamless, holistic way.

Consumer electronics has been an acknowledged influence on the design of in-vehicle infotainment systems for some time now. But never before has its impact been felt in so many different areas – from the way car OEMs are beginning to design the connected car user interface to how hard they try to catch up with consumer electronics’ rapid development cycles.

However, with the current proliferation of remote workforces, reliable connected services and affordable mobile devices, enterprises are starting to recognize that the systems should be, and, indeed, there is no reason for them not to be integrated.

In this week’s Brief: Gartner, BMW, NHTSA, Valeo, Audi, GM, Ford, Google, Hyundai, Honda, Nvidia, Mazda, OpenCar, Jaguar Land Rover, Bosch SoftTec, QNX, Toyota, AT&T, Ericsson, VoiceBox, Synchronoss, Accenture, Toyota and Kia

Insurance Telematics Canada 2014 will unite the emerging technical players of the UBI space with Canada’s biggest insurance carriers and brokers, making this a must-attend event at a tipping point for the industry.

With the DOT announcing their first step in their vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure mandate process in 2013, now it is time to investigate the full potential of this emerging technology. Don’t get left behind on the journey to a connected and intelligent automotive world as V2X & Auto Safety move from theory to reality.
