(Telematics Update) AT&T creates two new hubs for the connected car

Until relatively recently, the phrases ‘gender equality’ and ‘insurance telematics’ weren’t often heard in the same sentence. But since the European Court of Justice (ECJ) ruled in favor of the Belgian consumer group Test-Achats, declaring that “taking the gender of the insured individual into account as a risk factor in insurance contracts constitutes discrimination,” the two terms are frequently used together.

A Renault veteran of 25 years, Bonbon is responsible for the ADAS, telematics and multimedia engineering department. He has worked on the Visio driver assistance system, the Media Nav navigation service and, now, R-Link, Renault’s foray into app-based, in-vehicle infotainment (IVI).

That’s at least what Scott Fosgard, a spokesperson for infotainment at GM, envisions. “When I drive around now, I think of the old TV show,” Fosgard says. “You’re thinking of a need on the fly, and your car is solving that problem for you before you reach your destination. It’s the ability to redefine what a car is, and how it does it.”

In this podcast with TU’s Jan Stojaspal, Mike T. Stipe, senior vice president for worldwide sales and marketing, BSQUARE Corporation, talks about the need to keep the automotive human-machine interface, not the smartphone, the focal point of the connected car experience. He also discusses ways to reduce time to market and makes an argument for building in-vehicle infotainment systems with enough memory and processing power to allow for future feature upgrades.

In this week’s Brief: AT&T, Georgia Tech, Cisco, the Brazilian government, Contran 245, OnStar Mexico, GM, Tesco Bank, Microsoft, Audiovox, Continental, Harman, LG Automotive, Nokia HERE, Bing Maps, Google Maps, NHTSA and TomTom Business Solutions.
