(Pike Research) Cleantech Update - November 16, 2012

►Ford, Toyota Will Lead Plug-in Electric Vehicle Sales in the U.S. Through 2020
Assembly lines in Japan and the United States produced more than 20,000 plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) in 2011, an all-time record for such vehicles.  But optimism about the market for PEVs has gradually been replaced with a better understanding of the practical challenges of launching new models and expanding PEV sales to mainstream consumers unfamiliar with the technology.  Nevertheless, according to a recent report from Pike Research, a part of Navigant’s Energy Practice, sales of PEVs in the United States will climb steadily over the remainder of this decade.
Automakers Ford and Toyota will lead the PEV market in terms of total vehicles sold in the U.S. from 2012 to 2020, the study concludes.

►Advanced Batteries for Utility-Scale Applications in Asia Pacific Will Surpass $12 Billion in Market Value by 2022
Governments and industries in the Asia Pacific region find themselves struggling to keep pace with the new trends in global clean energy development.  One group of technologies of increasing interest is energy storage systems (ESSs), which enable operators to balance the fluctuations between electricity generation and electrical load and manage the variability in the grid’s frequency output.  Due to the diverse applications and benefits of ESSs – in particular, systems based on advanced batteries, such as lithium ion batteries and sodium sulfur batteries – most of the nations in Asia Pacific are beginning to support deployments of these systems.  According to a new report from Pike Research, a part of Navigant’s Energy Practice, the market for advanced batteries for utility-scale applications in Asia Pacific will reach $12.6 billion by 2022.

►North America Will Lead the World in New Smart Energy Capacity Additions through 2015
Renewable power sources – including hydrokinetic (which includes pumped storage), biomass, waste, geothermal, wind, solar photovoltaics (PV), and solar thermal – make up 10 percent of total electricity production in the United States.  While news headlines in this election year have highlighted failures by renewable energy companies, such as the solar panel maker Solyndra, North America leads the world in terms of additions of new renewable energy capacity.  According to a recent report from Pike Research, a part of Navigant’s Energy Practice, North America will add more than 400,000 megawatts (MW) of renewable capacity from 2012 through 2015, making it the leading region in the world for new renewable energy.

►Building Commissioning Services Will Reach $4.4 Billion in Market Value by 2020
Building commissioning services – which ensure that a commercial building’s equipment and control systems are performing as designed and that there are procedures in place to maintain high performance over time – have been offered for decades.  Today, a surge in growth in energy-efficient building design, along with the increased complexity of construction projects, is accelerating demand for these services, which include not only initial building commissioning, but also recommissioning, retrocommissioning, and continuous commissioning.  According to a new report from Pike Research, a part of Navigant’s Energy Practice, the annual market value of these services will double over the next eight years, growing from $2.2 billion worldwide in 2012 to $4.4 billion in 2020.
